Hardness and Hex

Remember the 2001 movie Wit, where Emma Thompson plays a professor of English suffering from terminal cancer.

Looking back on her life, she remembers being particularly insensitive to a student asking for an extension on an assignment, based on a family funeral. Rejected the request.

All of the hardness comes back. Where, most often, no hardness was required.

Person in military/police/security failing a Commercial Law exam. Course funded by the employer. Seeking discretion in terms of at least a bare pass. The humiliation and potential threat to career of failure. And what does one do…

It is in later years, looking back, that one sees so much that was so unnecessary, and produced…
