Just when I thought I finally learned my lesson well
There’s more to this than meets the eye
Sometimes wonder if students appreciate that most of the pedagogical assistance is in the instructor’s discretion. No obligation to set the course up in PowerPoint; no obligation to prepare supplementary material of any sort. Ends up being an expectation, where a reminder is needed that the instructor is spending the additional time based on his or her personal sense of obligation and dedication to the students, though no obligation in fact.
When at the business faculty at Concordia University, 1987-1992, would often be the coordinator of a multi-section Intermediate Accounting course, involving four or five other instructors. We would mark mid-term and final exams together and, over time, became aware of the various materials certain instructors were preparing as supplementary material for their respective sections. Also professional journal articles considered to be of interest. We decided to blend the material, to make it available to all students, across sections. No mercenary territory here; sold at reproduction cost. Printed with a blue cover; we began to call it Deep Blue.
Every term, we would add and refine what was there. It was a way to see the talent of the various instructors, through their particular take on course material, such as through providing illustrative computational examples or explanations.
No mercenary territory, but also no look at how wonderfully dedicated we are. We just did it because it seemed to be in the students’ best interest.
Remembering in high school the comparatively few teachers who would rush out of the building with the students, at 3:15, versus so many others, quietly working in their offices until close to 6 p.m.
