Even if you don’t take the money

In relation to the quote from Bill Cunningham that “If you don’t take the money, they can’t tell you what to do”, Neil Remington Abramson commented as follows (reproduced with permission):

Even if you don’t take the money, they’ll still tell you what to do. Or they’ll insinuate there’s something wrong with you, or that you’re inadequate, insensitive or incompetent. As my grandmother said to my father, she having given him two ties for his birthday, and he having put one of them on, “What’s the matter? You don’t like the other one?”
