Mike Smith: Voice Restrained

Simple and beautiful, in 2003:

Just before his accident, in September of 2003, falling over a fence, and becoming paralyzed effectively from the neck down.

Lived the balance of his life, for the next 4 1/2 years, primarily in hospital. Getting out and getting ready to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with the band of his major fame, the Dave Clark Five, where he was the lead singer and co-writer of many of their hits. Died two weeks before the induction. Maybe he knew.

The flat speech by Dave Clark, with the sad faces of surviving members Rick Huxley and Lenny Davidson, who weren’t given an opportunity to speak:

A brief reference to sax player Denis Payton, who had died slightly over a year before. Pointing out that he was represented at the induction ceremony by his two sons.

Mike Smith was not so represented. His only son, James. had died in a diving accident in 2003, three months before Smith was himself paralyzed.
