“Moral Imperatives, Badly Served”

Speaking with someone who has studied the Middle East for decades. Framed the current state of things as follows:

Western democracies have a tendency to support secular despots with varying degrees of criminality, and then drop them. The despots end up being replaced by theocracies that ultimately do not benefit the men and, in particular, the women, who supported the regime change. We end up with moral imperatives, badly served.

Much said, with few words.
